Europe Charges into lead at the Palmer Cup at The Stanwich Club
GREENWICH, Conn. – Europe won four singles matches and halved two others to take an 8.5-7.5 lead at the Palmer Cup at The Stanwich Club. Final-round singles matches will begin 8:30 am Saturday.
Pontus Widegren began the European run and evened the overall team score with a 6 and 4 win against Bank Vongvanij. Widegren claimed the first four holes and pushed his lead to 5-up after six. He would close the match with an eagle on No. 14.
America’s Andrew Yun claimed the second match of the day and put the United States back in the lead when he downed Nick MacAndrew, 7 and 6. Yun won holes two through seven. MacAndrew would take the eighth hole but Yun would birdie the ninth to push his led back to 6-up through nine holes. Yun parred No. 12 to win the match.
Europe would take the next two matches and move into the team lead when Nils Floren beat Daniel Miernicki, 3 and 2, and Jeff Karlsson outlasted Alex Carpenter, 2 and 1.
Floren never trailed against Miernicki. Floren would win the second hole with birdie. Miernicki would even the match with a birdie of his own on No. 5 before Floren won the next two. A birdie on No. 12 would extend Floren’s lead to 3-up. Miernicki birdied No. 14 to get back within two but Floren won the 15th and the match ended when both players carded par on No. 16.
Carpenter led most of the match against Jeff Karlsson. Carpenter won the second and fifth holes and was 2-up at the turn. Jeff Karlsson would win No. 10 with birdie to get within a hole but gave it back with bogey on the 12th. He would respond by winning four-straight holes - all with birdie - to take a 2-up advantage through 15 and held on for the 2 and 1 victory.
Robert Karlsson and Patrick Cantlay would halve the next match. The two players would trade holes early but Cantlay won both Nos. 7 and 10 to take a 2-up lead. Robert Karlsson would claim the 15th and 18th to square the match.
Blayne Barber would claim Team USA’s only other victory of the day when he beat Henrik Norlander, 2 and 1. The two would trade the first three holes with Barber 1-up after the third hole. Norlander would respond with wins on Nos. 5 and 7 to go 1-up. A birdie on No. 10 would extend Norlander’s lead to 2-up but Barber would win the next four holes. Norlander would birdie No. 15 to get back to 1-down before Barber closed the match with a birdie on No. 17.
Sebastian Cappelen would give Europe yet another victory in a 1-up triumph against Russell Henley. Henley birdied the first hole to take an early lead but posted bogey on No. 3 to move the match back to even. He would win the next two for a 2-up lead through five holes. Cappelen would take No. 11 to get to 1-down but fell back to 2-down after No. 13. Cappelen got back to even by winning two straight holes but gave a hole back after a bogey on No. 16. Cappelen would again move the match to all-square with a birdie on No. 17 and won the match after Henley missed a birdie putt on No. 18.
Ignacio Elvira and Chris Williams would halve the final match. Williams won the first hole but Elvira won Nos. 5 and 6. Elvira would extend the lead to 2-up at the turn with a birdie on No. 9. Williams would square the match with wins at No. 11 and 12. Elvira claimed No. 13 to regain the lead. Williams would take No. 15 with par and the two players would halve the remaining holes.
